It is not that you must be free from fear. The moment you try to free yourself from fear, you create a resistance against it. Resistance, in any form, does not end fear. What is needed, rather than running away or controlling or suppressing or any other resistance, is understanding fear; that means, watch it, learn about it, come directly into contact with it. We are to learn about fear, not how to escape from it, not how to resist it through courage and so on. - J. Krishnamurti

About David van der Want

David van der Want - Clinical Psychologist in Cape Town
David van der Want is a Clinical Psychologist in Cape Town

I am a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Cape Town South Africa.

My qualifications - a BA (Wits) 1990, BA Hons (Applied Psychology) (RAU) 1991 and MA Clinical Psychology (RAU) 1993. This last qualification cum laude. I have been registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa since January 1994.

Since this time I have worked as a psychologist in a variety of different contexts. I spent 18 months working in the Human Resources division of a large financial services organisation. From there I moved into the academic world, spending 2 years at the East London satellite campus of Rhodes University and after that 5 years in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pretoria where I was involved with the MA Clinical Psychology course as well as post and under graduate teaching.

Throughout this period I maintained a part time private practice, ran supervision groups for intern psychologists, led interpersonal psychotherapy groups with recovering addicts, worked as a supervisor of volunteer counsellors at a walk in and telephonic crisis centre and a variety of other professionally oriented activities.

In April 2002 I moved to Cape Town and, using rooms in the association of psychologists at Crescent Clinic, began working in full time private practice. During this time I have also led training groups at the South African College of Applied Psychology.
